Finger Lakes, New York Camping Trip - Day 3

Sign for Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail

Our plans for this day included another New York State Park with waterfalls – Taughannock Falls State Park. The park is known for the 215-foot-tall waterfall that plunges down a rocky cliff. The falls are higher than Niagara Falls and although they weren’t running at their fullest, they were still very impressive. The cliffs themselves tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge and the stream at the base of the falls flows directly into Lake Cayuga, which is just across the street from the parking area for the falls. There is an overlook at the north entrance to the park, and we took in the view there before driving down to the main entrance near the falls. The walk out to the falls is very short along a level pathway making it easily accessible.

After viewing the falls we walked across the street to the other half of the park, fronting on Lake Cayuga, where we had our lunch sitting by the water.

Next, we drove north along Lake Cayuga to look for two vineyards where we could do some wine tastings. The first one was closed, but we did stop at Lucas Vineyards where we sampled some wines and bought a bottle to take home.

Later, we all took our bicycles into Ithaca to ride the CayugaWaterfront Trail. We started at Stewart Park, following Fall Creek over some bridges past Cornell University’s Rowing Center and the site of Ithaca’s weekend Farmers Market. Then we crossed over the Cayuga Inlet to the other side and headed south until the trail dead-ended before returning back to Stewart Park. The ride was only about 6.5 miles round trip, but it was level and we had plenty of nice views of the water on our way.

We finished the day back at the campground with some more fishing, dinner and sitting by the campfire while we made our plans for the next day.
