Finger Lakes, New York Camping Trip - Day 1

 Saturday, June 24, 2023

After leaving Worlds End State Park in Pennsylvania, we drove across the New York border and headed north to the Pinecreek Campground, located in Newfield, just southwest of Ithaca in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Our oldest daughter and her family would be joining us there along with our oldest granddaughter. We planned to spend the week exploring as much of the area as we could. Rain was in the forecast nearly every day, so we kept our fingers crossed that the weather would hold out so we could all have a good time.

Pinecreek Campground is privately owned and reasonably priced. It’s located just a quarter mile from the north entrance to Robert H. Treman State Park. The campground has a small store, a large pavilion for activities, a new bathhouse and spacious new laundry room (something we desperately needed having just finished a week in a Pennsylvania state park with no laundry facilities). They also have a nice swimming pool with 3 cabanas, a playground, a fishing pond and a large carnival style sliding board. The campsites were widely spaced apart and it was quiet while we were there. The staff at the campground were friendly and helpful. We had good cell phone reception while there, so didn’t have any trouble using our GPS or sending/receiving messages. We also liked that the campground was located in an area that was away from population areas, but Ithaca, Watkins Glen and other areas of interest to us were a short drive away. We would stay at this campground again if we revisited the area.

The Finger Lakes are 11 lakes that resemble fingers laying a handprint across central New York state. The lakes have existed for more than two million years. Of the 11 lakes, Cayuga Lake is the longest at just under 40 miles in length. It runs from northern Seneca Falls to Ithaca. The second longest is Seneca Lake, at nearly 38 miles in length. It runs from the north end of Geneva to the south end of Watkins Glen. We would be spending all of our week on this trip exploring mostly the southern ends of these two lakes.

The entire Finger Lakes region is full of waterfalls and wonderful scenery, not to mention hundreds of wineries. There are a lot of attractions and activities for children, too. We were all looking forward to a week of adventuring!
