Review: Cherokee Park Family Campground - Mogadore, Ohio

"Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy a camper, which is kind of the same thing."

In July we took off on a long awaited adventure - a month of camping at six different campgrounds in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. We had recently purchased a GoPro and decided to test it out with a review of this campground. The following is the result of those efforts. Please keep in mind we are GoPro newbies and have a lot to learn!

Cherokee Park Family Campground is a small 50-acre family-owned campground located near Akron, Ohio at the end of a long dirt and stone lane. Almost all of the 120 campsites are seasonal/permanent sites with only approximately 17 for transient campers. Only the permanent sites had full hookups and were shaded. The transient sites only had water and electric.

The staff were friendly and guided us to our site when we arrived. You are not given a choice of selecting a site when you make your reservations. Your site is assigned when you arrive. However, there weren't many transient sites to choose from.

Our site was located in a mostly open field and the site wasn't entirely level. We had to use some blocks on one side, but it wasn't too bad. The site had a picnic table, a fire ring and a trash can, and fortunately we were shaded by a small tree on one side. Other trees had been planted but had a long way to go before they would provide shade.

There was one bathhouse/shower house for the campground with 3 showers each for the males and females. The bathhouse didn't have air conditioning, but there was a standing fan to help keep the air flowing. It looked like the bathhouse had been recently updated with fresh paint and was very neat and clean. There was a small laundry room on one end of it with 2 washers and 2 dryers.

The campground had two small ponds with one used for catch & release fishing and paddleboats, although the pond seemed a bit small for the paddleboats. The campground did not have a swimming pool. There was a recreation hall near the bathhouse with a lot of picnic tables in it. The campground had a lot of older playground equipment and some smaller play areas with a lot of Little Tykes type play equipment scattered throughout the campground. There were also some outdoor games, such as a giant Chess board, a giant Connect Four game, and corn hole.

All-in-all the campground served us well for our purpose and was very quiet. We only stayed there 3 nights and because we were there during the week, we didn't have the opportunity to see what kind of activities they might have. There was a game room listed in the brochure we were given at check-in, however it looked very small and run down. We caught a glimpse of an air-hockey table inside, but we didn't investigate further than driving past it on our way into the campground.

The campground was convenient to Cuyahoga Valley National Park and we found it was easy to make our way around the area from this base. If you are looking for a campground with few amenities for a short stay in this area, Cherokee Park Family Campground could be the one for you.
